Phoenix PSYCH 650 Borderline Personality Disorder
Those diagnosed with the mental disorder, borderline personality disorder (BPD) demonstrate emotional dysregulation, difficulty in relating with others, impulsivity and a distorted self-image (Thomsen et al. 2017). They can also show, according to Sollbergeret al. (2015), “affects of anger and hostility, self-destructive behavior and elevated stress and negative mood states” (p.560). This author will evaluate three peer reviewed research studies on treatments for BPD, conceptualize the disorder from the biological perspective and discuss treatments shown to be effective in decreasing the symptoms of BPD. The extreme emotions experience by those with BPD can lead to suicidal attempts or self-harm behaviors as a way to cope (Films Media Group, 2004). Sollberger et al. (2015) state, “patients with borderline personality disorder show various psychopathological symptoms and suffer especially from disturbance in their identity” (p.559).
