Phoenix PSYCH 650 Bulimia Nervosa
The eating disorder of Bulimia Nervosa consists of an abnormal body image accompanied by a fear of getting fat, weight within normal range and periods of uncontrolled eating of large amounts of food typically followed by purging (Films Media Group, 2017). According to Phillips, Greydanus, Pratt and Patel (2003), “compensatory behaviors can include vomiting, the use of diuretics or laxatives, fasting, dieting, diet pills, enemas or excessive exercise” (p.261). This author will evaluate three peer reviewed research studies on treatments for Bulimia Nervosa (BN), conceptualize this disorder using the diathesis-stress model and discuss the most effective treatment options for BN. The person with BN often feels guilty about their behavior and spends a lot of time trying to hide the binging and purging from friends and family (Butcher, Hooley & Minteka, (2014).
