Phoenix PSYCH 650 Research-Based Interventions on Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a major mental illness causing deficiencies in thought processes, feelings, socializing and ability to work (Tarrier & Wykes 2004). According to Osborne et al. (2012), “schizophrenia is a serious mental illness characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized communication, poor planning, reduced motivation, and blunted affect (p. 1). In this paper, the authors will discuss the diathesis stress model as it pertains to schizophrenia and the impact of the disorder on the family. The authors will explain the causal factor associated with this disorder as well as evaluate the psychosocial and cultural factors. One common symptom of schizophrenia is auditory hallucinations, such as the person believes they are hearing voices but may recognize these voices are not real but in their head (PBS 2016). Schizophrenia is, according to Tarrier and Wykes (2004), “characterized as a loss of contact with reality” and “affects 1 in 100 of the population” (p.1377).
