PHI 103 Final Paper Is the ‘Cry It Out’ Method Safe for Babies? (2018)
One of the hardest aspects of raising children is during the phase when you start sleep training the child. Sleep is not only important to the child, but also to the parents to avoid reaching the point of total exhaustion. While there are many schools of thought on this topic of sleep training, one which brings about much debate is the “cry it out” (CIO) method by Dr. Richard Ferber.  The CIO method is a sleep training method in which parents allow the infant to self-soothe for a certain amount of time before providing external comfort (Ferber, 2013). There are many who feel this is a very effective sleep training method, while others believe letting a child cry for a prolonged period of time will develop psychological and behavioral issues down the road. This paper will evaluate studies performed and show both the pros and cons of Dr. Ferber’s sleep training method.
