Abstract
On September 17, 2017, Equifax, one of the largest U.S. credit bureaus reported that they discovered “unauthorized access” to their computer systems. This breach may have affected up to 143 million Americans. The information at risk included: names, birthdates, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and credit card information.
In addition to the 143 million Americans affected, Equifax also identified unauthorized access to information for an unknown number of Canadian and UK residents.
This essay will give a summary of the Equifax data breach. It will also identify cyberlaw principles and explain how each of them apply in regard to Equifax and the security breach.
